Finding the perfect dinghy vehicle to tow behind on your travels can be a challenge. But thanks to the ever-growing popularity of recreational vehicles, more auto manufacturers are beginning to take heed of RVers' needs and preferences. Suzuki now offers three models with no tow mileage accumulation, four-wheel towing capability, and the durability to withstand cross-country adventures.
Here's an overview of Suzuki features to keep in mind when you shop for your next "toad," followed by links to general towing resources and advice:
No Tow Mileage Accumulation -- When comparing dinghy vehicles for towing, there are two basic categories: vehicles that accumulate mileage while being towed and those that don't. For the frequent RV traveler, tow vehicles can accumulate thousands of miles a year just from towing, lowering the vehicle's resale value. Suzuki vehicles that tow without accumulating mileage are:
The midsize XL-7 SUV provides ample cargo room and seating for up to seven. All XL-7 models come standard with 16-inch aluminum alloy wheels, automatic climate control air conditioning with micron-air filtration, power windows, heated power outside mirrors, keyless remote entry system and more.
The compact Grand Vitara SUV (pictured above), which seats five, is a smaller SUV with off-road capability. (NOTE: XL-7 and Grand Vitara four-wheel towing without mileage accumulation is only possible with four-wheel-drive. To tow, the key should be switched on, transfer case shifter in neutral position and transmission in park and second-gear for automatic and manual transmissions respectively.)
The Aerio SX and Aerio sedan, a compact crossover vehicle and versatile sedan. (NOTE: Aerio SX and Aerio sedan four-wheel towing without mileage accumulation is only possible with manual transmission models. To tow, the key should be switched on and the transmission should be in neutral position. Automatic transmission Aerio SX and Aerio sedan require the use of a tow dolly to avoid accumulating tow miles.)
Four-wheel Towing Capability -- Most of Suzuki's cars and SUVs can be towed with all four wheels on the ground, providing increased towing and driving stability. In conventional dinghy vehicle towing, when a heavy weight is applied at the hitch in the rear of the RV, the front of the RV can begin to rise, adversely affecting the stability, drivability and control because weight is lifted off the steering wheels. Suzuki avoids this problem by allowing all four wheels of the vehicle being towed to stay on the ground.
Affordability -- Since many RV travelers consider dinghy vehicles to be a secondary vehicle, finding a vehicle to tow at a low price is very important. The Aerio SX and Aerio sedan have MSRPs starting at $15,499 and $13,499 respectively. The Grand Vitara MSRP starts at $18,199. The XL-7 starts at $20,099 and ranges up to $27,499, depending on trim level and options. (MSRPs are for 2004 models.)
Low Curb Weight -- Getting an RV moving takes muscle, and towing lighter weight vehicles can ease engine strain and increase gas mileage for the towing vehicle. The Aerio sedan weighs in at 2,600 pounds, the Grand Vitera at 3,108 pounds.
Fuel Efficiency -- Travel costs can add up quickly, particularly for towing RVers, so a dinghy vehicle that gets great gas mileage saves money that can be used for more enjoyment on the road. The Grand Vitara offers 19 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway, while the Aerio sedan gets 25 mpg around town and 31 mpg on the highway.
Durability -- Towing and rugged use can quickly wear on a dinghy vehicle. Built using steel ladder-type frames, the Suzuki SUVs are designed to handle off-road advenures.
Towing Capability -- While on the road, most RVers look for products that serve more than one purpose, saving both time and money. Not only can Suzuki SUVs be towed, but they can also tow other vehicles, boats and trailers. The XL-7 can tow an impressive 3,000 lbs. while the Grand Vitara can tow up to 1,500 lbs.
Cargo Capacity -- Being prepared for anything and everything means taking along a lot of gear. Even day-tripping from the RV park can require abundant cargo room. From the midsize XL-7 SUV with available seating for seven to the compact Aerio sedan, Suzuki offers a range of choices for an on-the-go lifestyle.
Warranty -- American Suzuki offers a 100,000-mile/7-year powertrain limited warranty on the entire lineup of small cars and SUVs. The powertrain limited warranty covers the engine, transaxle, transmission and transfer case, and front- and rear-wheel drive systems. Suzuki's Roadside Assistance Program covers any new vehicle during the standard bumper-to-bumper warranty period (3 years/36,000 miles). A 24-hour/365-day roadside plan is available throughout the U.S. and Canada and covers tire changes, jump starts, lockout services and towing services, available through out the duration of the standard bumper-to-bumper warranty.
